Recruiters often ask about hobbies — and honestly, hobbies or “for fun” projects come and go.

Sometimes it’s hard to answer right away because what I do for fun changes over time.... I stumbled upon MeshCore LoRa recently.

In simple terms, it’s a way to create a mesh network using LoRa radios — long-range, low-power communication without relying on Wi-Fi or cellular. Perfect for off-grid scenarios and just fun to experiment with.

What does it take?

A LoRa board (I’ve got a Heltec V4 on my desk)

An antenna (on its way)

A bit of curiosity and patience

Cost? Surprisingly low — just a few dozen euros for the hardware.

The hardest part? Already done, mounting an antenna pole on a steep roof to get the best range.

Next up: powering up my first repeater and seeing how far this network can stretch. For me, this isn’t just a hobby — it’s a way to keep learning and play with tech outside of work.

See You in the MeshCore LoRa network.
